Subject: welcome back (for the time being, at least)
Hey, back where we started; but hopefully not for too long.
What went wrong?
Since last Thursday, the Back Page messegeboard has been unavailable. Originally I assumed that this was because of server problems &c, as at the time many other Digitalrice member sites were down.
However, I have just found out that the site had been suspended - without prior warning - for 'excessive CPU violations', ie for overloading the server. I assume that this wasn't due to overwhelming visitor numbers, but because the software we were using (Ikonboard v 2.1.9) makes heavy processing demands, esp when there are a lot of messages on the board.
What next?
I'm in the process of installing a new messageboard, running on Lycos (yeah, I know!) & using different (more modern) software. There are some bugs which need to be eradicated, and I want to take across the messages and member records from the old m/b. A suitable converter is expected to be available in the next week or so - & then I've got to run the conversion. So I'm not too hopeful of getting the new board working ahead of September.
Meanwhile...
...I've resurrected this messageboard as a stopgap. It doesn't require posters to register, but please use the same name you used on the late Ikonboard. If you never registered there and want to post here, please use the same name each time you post.
On this board you can't edit messages after you've posted them (& neither can admin!), so please use the 'preview' facility & check your message before finally posting.
Please note: messages posted here won't be carried forward to the new messageboard.
Oh, & I'll be looking for volunteers to test-drive the new board, before we go live, hopefully to unearth any bugs I haven't yet spotted, & other major snags!

Thanks Pico -- JonLee4Me, 13/08/02 15:13 Tue
It is terrible that our wonderful messageboard has been closed down - and without warning. Thanks Pico for your efforts in putting together this temporary alternative before the new board (with all our old posts) is up and running.
I really hope that all the community stays together here - we musn't let what we hjave fall apart. So keep posting guys - pics or comments, anything. The new season is about to start, let's not waste the opportunity!
Now I'm going to try posting a pic here - to see if it works!

Cheers Pico! -- britboy21, 13/08/02 21:15 Tue
So glad you've made a temporary shelter for the Board here. I do hope that reguialr posters will remember to check BP central and not just try the old board's URL which they may have bookmarked.
Thanks again Pico for the very wonderful board and I do hope it continues to thrive!

First nice sight on this new board! Brilliant JL4M!!!
Great way to launch and restate our mission statement here. Hot footy totty (and Totti) rules and Gerarrd gets us that great opening frisson on here!!!!!

progress report -- pico, 14/08/02 0:47 Wed
I've heard some ominous things about the conversion programmes, which suggest that they won't work on Lycos; Rather than wait till September to find this out for sure, I'm trying to convert the old board data myself. I've just finished doing the member records; the topic headings are coming along nicely. The actual messages (the biggest job) may, er, take a leetle bit longer!
Good point about bookmarks, bb: I may try a mailshot to all members when the new board is up & running, giving the new URL.
Thanks for staying in touch!

Hey there -- fowlerfan, 14/08/02 12:32 Wed
Just a quickie to say that you can't get rid of some of us, no matter how hard you try!
Did someone let Roy Keane attack the old server?
Thanks for all the work you're doing Pico...we'll still be here!!

oh thank goodness -- Angua, 15/08/02 21:39 Thu
this is the first time I've been able to get on here since the old messageboard went down...glad to see we're carrying on regardless - remember chaps, this is how we got through the Blitz :-)
Mind you, if I'd have got a picture of Stevie G for every air raid, I'd have got through the Blitz no problem!

Keeping it up! -- britboy21, 16/08/02 10:26 Fri
Fowlerfan is a very naughty lad!
All of us with peckers will most certainly be keeping them up for the new season! LOL!! (he's even making me bad!)
But I know our trusty moderators are working very hard on our new home, which will be nothing short of amazing!!
Don't forget the new season starts tomorrow and Serie A a few short weeks later. Personally I can't wait to see my favourite players shine again, gracing the backpages, Fottball Italia magazine and the sunday supplements.
(Oh and I hear ITV is so disappointed with "The Premiership" they're considering Des Lynam's replacement for the following season. Perhaps it won't be too long before the rights go home to BBC1!)
Plenty to get excited about then, so start practising your skills, team! :)
