Kosses let the slightest of bays issue from her throat. It was a deep sound that sent quivers trough the base of her spine. Her glance back had turned no hide nor hair of her male counterpart. Where was he? He had been there moments before. Kosses’ mouth shut and the fat edges of her jaws curved up in a smile like arch. In the ease of the moment and the lack of threat from opposing territories, Kosses had let down the rough exterior. She no longer held her body with the tension of suspected attack. Years of survival skills were dashed in a few weeks of careless bliss. It was careless and irresponsible. It was this reason that the thought of an intruder had never occurred to her and if the winds held in the female’s favor- the reason Kosses would never see the ambush coming.
Kosses ears perked with anticipation from the return call her cry would issue. She had issued the cry and for a linger moment, no response was offered. Kosses then expected Gavin to leap out and surprise her. They were like puppies full of spring and bounces and half hearted attacks. She crouched low to the ground and let her eyes sweep around the woods. She saw nothing but tree trunks, un-melted snow(!), and flowers. To think, she’d seen the trailing shadow of the female and never thought twice. This is how alphas end up dead.
