To concentrate on tobacco for a moment...Previous generations didn't know all about the harmful effects of smoking, either through primary or secondary smoking. Now we do, so anyone who smokes, encourages smoking or exposes others to their own smoke is fully aware of what they are doing. That's why it's so sexy, and why it's particularly hot to smoke around kids and/or encourage them to smoke, and why it's so sexy for pregnant women to smoke regardless of all the health warnings. It's also why I so admire the tobacco companies for their sublimely unethical practices. They suppressed and attempted to refute the scientific evidence, and even now when it can no longer be denied they continue to trade, knowing that state systems rely on the tax income they generate and therefore they won't be closed down. The beauty of tobacco is that it's not only harmful, it's addictive. Even without the other stuff it is plainly unethical to market such an addictive substance. Kudos to anyone who works for or invests in the tobacco industry.
