In answer to Robert, I can say that panty girdles were virtually unknown back in the 1950s and very little worn until tights first appeared along with mini skirts in the late 1960s. There was some limited attempt to market them in the pre-tights years both for wear under trousers (something women were just beginning to do) and for "sports", notably tennis and golf, I think. Not many women wore trousers other than perhaps for gardening or country walks, so they wouldn't bother buying a girdle specially for those activities. I remember my girlfriend laughing at the idea of buying a girdle for playing tennis.
When tights took over from stockings for every-day wear, women who were used to wearing a girdle for figure shaping bought a panty girdle - usually a brief style - for wear with tights. Those early panty girdles usually came with four attachable suspenders but my then girlfriend never used them and after a while they were no longer supplied.
I only learned that panty girdles were more generally worn in the USA when the internet came along and I read about schoolgirls wearing them with stockings. In Britain (and throughout Europe, I think) schoolgirls wore suspender belts or girdles, not panty girdles.
Heather (above) confirms that open girdles restricted walking more than panty girdles. As an observer, I know that stockings tended in those earlier times to come up to around mid-thigh and girdles were designed to extend below the buttocks on to the top of the legs with short suspenders tightly attached to the nylons. I read somewhere a comment from a woman saying that a girdle made walking "harder work".
