In reply to: Amanda 's message, "Rocephin" on Monday, December 12, 2011, 09:00: pm

I have only had one shot of Rocephin and I do not really want another unless I really need one. A medical assistant at this clinic gave me mine. He used sterile water to dilute the vial. I have not had a shot with lidocaine to compare, but I have asked a lot of people who got Rocephin at a doc's office and they said it was diluted with sterile water, too. I know most hospitals use lidocaine though. On a nurse blog someone said that an ER doc tells them not to use lidocaine because it burns worse than the sterile water alone. Also, one nurse told me that at their office they did not want to have to worry about people that were allergic to lidocaine.

I mix the rocepin with lidocaine when I can as it hurts less. I gave one of our ER technicians a shot in her butt yesterday for a severe ear infection. I mixed up the one gram in 3cc of lidocaine and then drew it up in 2 3cc syringes 1.5cc each. At first I showed one syringe with the 3cc. I told her her bottom would be so sore she could not sit let alone walk. It was her first rocephin shot and it was her first shot in the butt since she was a little girl. She kept stalling until the end of the shift. She was afraid she would scream and be embarrased. I said I will bring it over to your house and give it to you there. I went over to her house this morning and knocked on her door. She answered and when she saw me she turned white. She let in. I said lets go to your bedroom so you can relax. She was wearing a short nightie and I could see the bottom of her butt cheeks. Kinda hard to relax you are about to get jabbed in the butt by two needles. She laid across the bed causing her nightie to ride up onver half of her butt. I flipped it up the rest of the way. She had on a small pair of bikini panties which only covered the center portion of her tight butt. I pulled her panties down to her knees. I rubbed a cotton ball acorss her butt cheek. I waited a few seconds and then slapped her left butt cheek with my open hand and quickly inserted the 18g needle into her butt and slowly injected. I pulled out the needle. She said my butt hurts from you salpping it so hard. Did you feel me stick you with that needle? Not really. it is starting to ache now. Once again I cleaned a spot and gave her other ass cheek a hard slap and jabbed and injected. I wiped the two small blood trails running down her butt cheeks and placed bandaids on the sites. I got two packages of f rozen vegetables and laid them on her bare buns. 2o minutes later I removed the packs and her white butt cheeks were bright red from the cold. I then gave her a long slow butt massage. An hour later I helped her get her panties back up and into some jeans. She limped around and made me something to eat. The next day at work she said she felt a lot better, but her bottom needed some attention if I had time. I was more than willing to give her another long massage. Mixing lidocaine with rocephin is common if the nurse is sympathetic.
