Hi,
Last year I went for 5 spine surgeries. 3 in the cervical and 2 in the lumbar. I did not get any shots during any of the surgeries. I told the doctors that any pain killers go in my IV. However, on the 5th surgery, I was moved into a small room. The nurse said she was going to give me some medicine and a shot. Immediately, I started getting nervous. I thought about it after she left and was debating whether to deny the shot. I hadn't received any shots for years! I decided that I would go along with it and not protest (guts). So the nurse comes back and has me drink some medicine and then she says, I need you to roll over. I was as nervous as hell but decided I would go along with it. I was leaking spinal fluid and the hole had to be sealed up. So I feel her rub my butt with alcohol and then she jabs the needle in. It wasn't too bad but I felt the needle. The medicine burned just a drop and it was over. But when they wheeled me back into the intake area, my butt started aching even more. Now I was pissed. Not only did my head hurt but now I had a new pain on my butt! I remember thinking, who needs this! The medicine burned more and more as I waited to be taken out. Finally they took me and put me out and when I woke up, I had no pain in my butt. I was thinking, if this was a penicillin or Bicillin shot, the needle would have been larger and the medicine would be thicker. THAT would have killed. I said to myself, I'll never take one of those shots. No way. I realize we want to get better fast, but last thing I need is a new pain in my butt on top of being ill. And the butt pain from a larger shot would hurt for days....I am consdiering letting them give me a cortizone shot in my spine. But I'll go to a place that puts me out for that. At least when I wake up the cortizone will kill all the pain. I may go for 1 more lumbar surgery and it's questionable whether I'll let them give me any shots. I'll decide once I'm laying there.
The last time I had penicillin shots was when I was a kid; Maybe until 12. The whole family watched and laughed when I got shots! I got them at least once a year. And all of them killed. They were like torture. And they were given by my grandfather who was the family doctor who lived next door!!!!! Cheers.....Tim
