I've had sedative shots several times in the hospital. Two were before surgery. Another two were before a procedures that were disturbing. I wasn't going to be knocked out when they were done. Every one of them were in the butt and hurt a lot. There were given quickly not like a thick antibiotic. Whatever the medicine was it burned and I felt a severe stinging. After it started taking effect I didn't notice and they took effect quickly. Anesthetic was always in an IV. That was sort of a weird feeling but didn't hurt.

If you're pre-op today, you will most likely receive a sedative by IV.

Hi,
I had 5 of the same surgeries last year and only in 1 of them did I receive a shot in the butt first. I think it was medicine to dry me up. I let the nurse do it to see what it felt like. It was small and quick but it stung for awhile until they totally put me out.....Tim

My experience is the same as that of Glenn & Catherine: anesthesia or sedative for surgery is usually given by IV. I can think of two exceptions to that rule:
a. Dental work: my dentist applies something like a Q-tip with lidocaine on it to my gum. When the area is deadened, then he injects whatever he's using as pain killer.
b. Laser 'touch up' (my ophthamologist's words) on my eye several years after cataract surgery: a technician dispensed numbing eye drops every 10-15 minutes for about 90 minutes prior to the event, which was about 20 seconds of having a laser 'zap' my eye. I was otherwise awake and alert during that procedure & that was the only 'anesthesia' given that day.

In hospital just before a surgery I also got a sedative injection in my butt. but that was as a young girl, dont think it will still be the case. and as far as I remember it did not hurt too much. it was more the surprise as it happened early in the morning while not being really wake up.

Waiting in the cubicle of a day-clinic, a nurse came in to give me a pre-med injection. The fact that she held it behind her back belied her assurance, "I'm just going to give you a little shot in your bottom; it won't hurt - bend over". The fact that she wouldn't let me see it convinced me that it was a really big injection but I obediently bent over the exam table. She pulled down my pants and told me to try to relax (which I couldn't). Then I felt it right were I sit. It did hurt but was quickly over and didn't leave my bottom too sore afterwards.

When I was the first time in hospotial the sedation was administered in für shots, two in butt and two in the lege. It was very unpleasant, especially since two young nurses did it. Who had similar experience?

Hi,
Today I dont think they give any shots before surgery. Although I did get a small one to dry me up.

But why did they give shots in the 50's and 60's before surgery? And how many would they give?
Tim

In early sixties I had surgery and the pre med comprised two injections one was to dry up saliva and the other to relax the patient and make induction easier. Both were given in the buttocks.
