I am curious how many parents would force their teenager to get a Penicillin shot if they didn't want it.
My grandfather was our family doctor and if I was sick, my mom forced me to take a shot. After being examined in the living room, my grandfather would say, "I am going to give him a shot."
I immediately flipped and started crying and protesting. I was then crying in the living for about 40 minutes while my grandfather prepared the shot in the kitchen. I begged my mom not to get it, but it fell on deaf ears. I must have cried out 5 pound of water.
After about 40 minutes my mother, aunt, and grandmother would come into the living room and force me on the couch. I would be screaming and crying as they pulled down my pants and underwear.
After they had me ready, they would call out to my grandfather "he's ready." My grandfather then came into the living room with a metal tray. On it was a giant needle. I would always catch a glimpse when he came in the room. My entire family were all laughing as they held me super tight. Suddenly I felt a swab of alcohol and I cried even louder. I knew that any moment I was going to feel the worst pain in my life.
As they were laughing, they would all begin to count to three. I was flipping! The most terrifying feeling in the world was to know that on three, I was going to feel that huge needle get jabbed hard. When they finally got to three, I felt the entire length of the needle go deep into my butt. It hurt like crazy and I couldn't move. The needle was big and I could feel it deep inside me.
It was hurting so bad but when the medicine went in, I went crazy. It burned and burned and I was helpless because everyone was holding me so tight. It kept burning and I kept screaming. It was very thick medicine and it took a long time to finish. Then, when he pulled the needle out it hurt even more! Everyone was laughing but I couldn't move for over 20 minutes because it hurt so bad.
After every shot in the butt, I would always go up to my room and cry on my bed. I didn't come down for hours. It hurt for several days and I kept remembering the needle inside me.
This was the way it happened until I was 15. After that, I didn't get sick thank God.
There were times I was outside and I was fooled into coming in the house; Only to learn I was getting a shot. I was in front of the house and my mom would yell out the door, "Tim, I have something for you, come inside." I would stop what I was doing and run in, only to be told I was getting a shot. Instant panic! Since I was already in the house, there was no way out of it. I went through the same scene as above. I'm sure my friends wondered why I never came back out. As I said above, after the shot I would limp up to my room and cry on the bed....
I know these days there are choices of pills for any infections. Do parents today still force their kids to get a shot even if they are in their teens? Or, would you just make sure they took the pills everyday?
I have no kids but I don't think I could force my kid to take such a painful shot. Pills may take longer, but at least they wont go through the horrible pain of a shot.
I would be interested to hear peoples opinions or real life experiences with this.....
