I borrowed one from my inspector. A bit of sticky paper or similar stuck on the back of a propellor blade should be enough to reflect sufficient light to read propellor RPM during a flight by sellotaping the instrument on the combing in the cockpit and thus you can read propellor RPM throughout the full rev range during flight. Assuming you have a 2 to 1 reduction gearbox, you can calculate what actual prop speed you are getting and compare this with the Tachometer reading in real time.
