Subject: Tightening Main Undercarriage Bolts

My 582 taildragger has an aluminium Grove Undercarriage, and from time to time the (2 each side) attachment nuts and bolts work slightly loose. Its not very loose but enough to make a clunking noise if the plane is rocked back and forth with the wheels chocked. I think they work loose because the Grove attachment lugs rotate slightly as the undercarriage flexes.

Tightening the front attachment bolt is easy as both bolt head and nut are accessible, but the rear bolt has a countersunk head with a screwdriver slot, so its a two person operation and you have to remove the wings to get to the countersink. Tightening is made more difficult because the aero stiffnut tries to turn the bolt with the nut.

To overcome this problem I have now replaced each stiffnut with two plain nuts. I fit and tighten one nut first and then fit and tighten the second nut with loctite applied to that nut only. There's only enough thread for it to go on 3-4 turns but that should be enough to stop the first nut coming loose. Using plain nuts I've also found that I can avoid needing a second person and taking the wings off. Instead I run a ratchet strap between the bottom of the undercarriage leg (near the wheel) and the rear of the fuselage (just above the tailwheel rod). Tightening the strap (not too tight!!) grips the bolt shaft and prevents it from rotating as the nut is tightened.
