Hi Rob. When I want to get off a short strip I've taken to selecting the second stage of flap. I feel I get off the grund better but have not measured the performance difference if indeed there is any. I think that with a tailwheel aircraft and such a low wing it must benefit from extra lift in ground effect. I retract the flaps as soon as I'm airbourne. In my opinion I dont feel the flaps add much drag. The main benefit I find is the improved visibility with the nose pitching down when flaps are selected.
