I'm glad you were able to realize that noise doeesn't equal performance >;-) I think many would benefit by using the OEM muffler but there is such a lot of wrong information out there and some people just want to believe that spending money on something that sounds different is making a difference.
The one thing that doesn't change is that BMW designed and built these cars to be almost optimum right from the factory. Without spending big $$$ there are no measureable benefits to be had with add-ons.

The only thing I can think of that may be different between the M40 and the M42 is the transmission and whether they will bolt up. Perhaps someone with experience or actual knowledge will help you out :-)
