Subject: I watched all week and this is my opinion. I think that the winner did well all week and she did a good job of showing up when she needed to. Some of those other contestants like Midsouth Fair (who I liked, by the way) and Knoxville who both competed in previous years seemed to be going through the motions. More inside

It wasn't the most exciting pageant week I had ever seen or finals night. I think anyone who wanted to win it was theirs for the taking. Lane College stepped it up last night and she definitely stood out. She seemed to want it, and she looked great during evening gown. She seems young and raw and some of the rest of the contestants did not. Some of the younger ones seem like they need more experience to be competitive.

I could not keep up with all the mid-titled contestants last night but I did not have the first runner-up that high. I barely noticed her all night. Overall, I think the judges made the right choice based on everything but the only other one I had in the top 5 was Germantown. At very least based on her consistency I thought Tipton County would be top 5. She spoke a bit fast last night in her monologue and I think that might have hurt her chances.

I saw someone ask why she won with ASL talent. ASL is considered a language and I personally do not even put it in the same category as a monologue. It would be akin to someone getting up and speaking French to music if you want to get technical about it. But she was entertaining with it. I couldn't score it very high personally if I was judging because if you really know about ASL you would know it was a language. I think she did as best as she could with it. If I was the TN directors I would encourage her to change it. Although she did it as best as one could, it really is not a talent. A monologue would be more appropriate. In the Miss America system at the 1968 pageant a contestant signed to What The World Needs Now and got all the way to first runner-up with it. But that was 55 years ago. The MAO state winners have a lot of monologue winners and it is possible that you see a monologue talent win Miss America in the future, so you never know. Me personally, I was getting wary of hearing monologues. Except Miss Dallas at the Miss TX pageant, hers was really good. I am not sure the official status of monologues for the Volunteer system but I am glad to see less of them. I do not begrudge a contestant to do a monologue if it is done well but they're getting a dime a dozen and they are pretty much just motivational speeches. I did this, I overcame that. That's fine, but that to me is more interview.

Enough about that. I think the winner will continue TN's success at Miss Volunteer America. She was the best last night, she came competing to win and she deserved it.

If I had one word of constructive advice for the returnees is that you have to keep it fresh every year. I mean that with Knoxville and Midsouth Fair as well.
