My thoughts: why not just let him go and save the potential reputation damage of the org?

The changes made them nearly identical and Volunteer is only in their second year. Plus a lot of Volunteer girls are ones that aged out of America. America definitely has greater name recognition. There are a lot of pageants out there but most weren’t trying to be Miss America pre 2.0

Can someone tell me how someone enters this pageant? I mean do you just say “ I want to be Miss _____ “ and bam you’re in? I just recently watched someone lose in the Miss SC Teen then the next week she was Miss ___.Never even any announcement of a pageant being held. Just curious as to how someone is chosen. I had no idea there was even a Miss Volunteer pageant.

At least 3 Teens at Miss Teen Volunteer America had 0 ties to the state they represented.
What is the point in having a state pageant and be required to prove residency, school or work eligibility is the National board is going to appoint at-large state titles to girls from Tennessee to put a body on stage?

Anna Grace Loudenbeck was Miss Germantown Teen Volunteer, placed 3rd runner up at Miss Tennessee Teen Volunteer, paid to be an at-large titleholder with 0 ties to Maryland, and is now Miss Teen Volunteer America in the same pageant cycle.

Congratulations to the Miss Volunteer America Pageant board for figuring out a way to the rig the pageant, not have every contestant eligible by the the same rules, and you get your Tennessee girl in the end.

Marti Sullivan was right going to a different pageant. She saw the writing on the wall.

I want to preface this by saying I like what Alison is trying to achieve with the Volunteer system and I am rooting for it to succeed. I also think they are a lovely family who clearly adore each other. However.... I just can't help but cringe at all the self-indulgent behavior I see from the DeMarcus family. Alison has 1000 gown changes, Jay thinks it's amateur night at the Laugh Factory (often saying inappropriate things) and they have their kids performing, one is apparently Volunteer Princess emerita. It all just feels self-aggrandizing. This isn't a local or even a state pageant - maybe that would fly there. This is a program that is trying to build a national pedigree and take over the top spot from an iconic institution. This indulgence and focus on their family just doesn't scream, "We are a serious organization and are trying to elevate pageantry." The video with Sydney Dion was perfect. They should focus on showcasing aspirational figures who lend relevance to the sport of pageantry. They also need to get a proper PR team that can help develop a stronger grass-roots movement that attracts new contestants, engages communities and fosters more robust sponsorship (including in-kind scholarships from universities). Right now, the program is reading like a top-notch state pageant. I'm just not seeing the vision clearly articulated and I think the over-indulgence of the DeMarcus family would be a turn off to would-be sponsors viewing the pageant for the first time. They have such a strong foundation and they could be successful, but it's time to get serious and stop with the DeMarcus Family Fun Hour.

As a former state title holder for Miss America and Miss USA, I am appalled by the judges' choices for the top 15! Half of these contestants shouldn't have even made it past the talent portion. Frankly, the organization should eliminate the talent section altogether! Minnesota's talent alone should have secured her spot in the finals, much like MS's swimsuit did, given how terrible her talent was! And don't get me started on the bogus "Fitness & Wellness." Also, I’m very surprised Miss Connecticut didn’t make top! She’s gorgeous and has more talent in her legs alone than half of these other contestants. Then again, he just won an NBA championship with the Celtics! She’s got life down!

Miss VA Judge here, and I would like to clear up some confusion. While I did not judge the national pageant, I did judge and crown two state winners (one Northeast, one South) for this year's national pageant. One lady I crowned made the top 15, and the second lady I crowned did not (although she should have based on the judging criteria). I was present for both prelims and finals, and I can confirm that the judging was not the same as at the state pageants. On the national level, they did indeed judge primarily on looks and stage presence based on Demarcus' WANTS (emphasis on wants). The "merit" awards were given to contestants who should have been in the top 15 by the "authentic" MVA judging but didn't rank in the "wants." Minnesota, Connecticut, and Missouri were victims of this.

I've seen comments saying that the scoring is "25% across the board" but that's not entirely true. There were a number of ties after prelims that was then decided by the look of contestants. (Interviews would have broken the ties an kept contestants in top 15.)

If anyone is curious about the judging criteria, I can upload the rulebook I was given when judging the two state pageants (which was supposed to be the same criteria for the national pageant). This will most likely be my final pageant as a judge. I don't think I have it in me to keep misleading young girls who put so much effort and hard work into a system that was never for them from the beginning.

I hope this clarifies any misleading comments on this forum. Congratulations to all the contestants. Life still goes on! <3

1. The finalists all deserved to be there. I was alongside the head scratchers when they announced the top 16 when my picks didn’t make it or I couldn’t even remember some of the girls. However, these thoughts dissipated as they re-competed. Almost all had strong ss walks and those who didn’t made up for it with their incredible talent. Was there more talented girls who didn’t make the cut? Yes. Does that take away from the talent of those who made it? No.

2. Pageantry is the game of getting a group of strangers to fall in love with you after less than 15 minutes of face time. With that, biases tend to result in the majority of women in the top having a similar look. While this does bring out bigger issues such as racism, homophobia, and other incredibly harmful prejudices, unfortunately bias will always hold a firm place in pageantry.

3. “____ was robbed!” No they weren’t. To be robbed of something it needs to belong to you in the first place. Every contestant put in months or years of preparation to be able to perform on that stage. Every girl deserved a spot on that stage to demonstrate that, but the virtue of hard work alone does not guarantee anyone a finalist spot.

4. “The results weren’t fair.” Pageantry is subjective and not fair. If you want a “fair” and equal sport, try soccer.

Former MAO titleholder here with no skin in the game; just some thoughts because I’ve always loved pageants. This was my first time watching the Volunteer pageant and prelims and hoped it would be different than MAO or some of the others. I judged from my couch and was very surprised at the Top 16. Even more surprised at the Top 10 based on some of the “talent.” Had the winner picked from Night 3, so no surprise there.

Some things that are concerning (for all pageants now) include the thinness of these girls and the revealing gowns. Several of the girls tonight were INCREDIBLY thin. I get being in shape because I had to do it too when competing, but it’s really getting out of hand. Some of these girls don’t look healthy AT ALL. New Mexico was my favorite in Fitness/Wellness because she looked shapely, natural, and healthy. The winner tonight looked disturbingly thin to me, but I guess it could’ve been the livestream distorting her physique. These girls employing trainers to fit a certain standard is not what pageantry was intended to promote. And these gowns aren’t even gowns anymore. They just remind me of Fitness/Wellness all over again with some extra fabric. Where is the distinction between the categories? I’m so bored with the hip-high slits and the ultra revealing designs. I was glad to see New York’s gown actually look like an evening gown. Please understand I’m under 30 and am not a modest dresser, but come on y’all. Some of these girls look overly mature and dare I say less-than-elegant just by their gown choices. When are we going back to class, elegance, and natural beauties, the timeless titleholders?

For those young ladies who have been overlooked or have hit a brick wall in other systems….give MVA a try! Don’t read into the negativity that the sour grape bunch post on here. You don’t have to be the top of every category to be seen in MVA because every category counts the same. That is why you see the confusion because you have to understand how the scoring works! Don’t be scared to step out and try something new!!!!

I’m sure every girl is a great girl but I’m seriously confused about the top 15/10? Some of the girls that made it were completely underwhelming in stage presence — which is obviously what Allison is wanting… I personally think New Mexico and Kansas were robbed. Both were put together, great wardrobes and stood out all week.

This one is still too close to call...and I don't think prelims will count for much in the end. That said, here are who I have in the 15 based on prelim performance.

The "Shoo-ins": South Carolina, Pennsylvania, New York, Missouri, California (and this could be top 5 as far as I'm concerned).

The "Good bets": Mississippi, Tennessee, Arizona, Alabama, Connecticut

The "Reasonable chances": Nebraska (would love to see her talent again), Washington, Texas, Georgia, New Mexico, North Carolina, Massachusettes, Florida, Kentucky, Minnesota

Am I the only one that feels a little let down by this organization? When we started I was so hopeful that this organization would be more like the MAO of the past. So many of our states do amazing things but at the national level the only thing we see our girl doing really is photoshoots beautiful clothing and going to pageants. Where is the service aspect? We need do better if we are going to compete with other organizations. Please let this be the year that our national is more than just a pretty face.

Why is nobody talking about the Texas Teen Volunteer
(Fed up). She is known as a mean girl. My daughter told
me that during Miss Texas week she was nothing but obnoxious and blatantly rude and her mother is even worse. This title should've gone to someone else. Disappointed in this "winner." She and her mother put on a show.

Ask her about her videos that have surfaced...

Anyone know what’s going on with the SC volunteer group? Heard several things from former contestants and parents: one of the board members and most of their local directors resigned before the pageant or walked away afterwards, contestant yelling backstage after crowning that they were recruited and promised the title, no prize package announced, etc

MVA really needs to promote the Teen Program more. The teens actually do more in their reigns and are much more visible than most of the Miss State representatives . Without more equality with regard to the Miss program you will lose future Miss contestants.

Subject: Suggestions as MVA looks to future

Author:

Date Posted: Sun June 25, 2023 18:52:38

Last year everyone was happy that there was an alternate to MAO and wasn’t toxic. This year I believe growing pains are here. Just a few thoughts.
1. Be clear to the states what a national titleholder needs to have. We all understand that this isn’t a talent competition but come on, this was a super weak top 5 talent and it’s hard to explain to potential contestants what happened, except to say it must have come out of interview. That excuse only goes so far.
2. Provide states with marketing material. Some states are blessed to have volunteers in this area but many are not. If there was social media ads, reels, etc that all states could use to help present a brand this would be very helpful.
3. Publish the scholarships given in the program book! No one knew what was being given until the winners were being called out. Provide scholarships to the prelim winners too.
4. We all get that MVA wanted to have all 50 states represented. However, if the states that work hard to put in a pageant have to abide by residency requirements, so should everyone else. I would rather leave a state out than have someone who is a non resident of that state in the stage. That takes away opportunities for those who met residency requirements to compete.
5. Judges, yes we all know it’s hard to find judges. However, the panels that are being put together have no pageant experience, minus one or two. Not sue their instructions but need more experienced people.
6. Production, the stage is beautiful! But it’s time to become a national pageant. The Princesses are great and I’m sure they are a money maker, time for them to move to the Teen pageant. Their being in the Miss pageant, makes it feel like a state MAO pageant and not a national competition. To be at a USA/MAO level it’s time to get professional MC’s. Many times there is so much banter that a girl is left standing on stage waiting way too long to perform. This isn’t fair to the girl. And introducing Christine and a full walk across state like a reigning titleholder is a bit much. Maybe you keep MCs like they are for prelims but stick to a script and bring in a professional for Sat night. As things grow, it’s time to take it to the next level. That goes for the national Princess coming in stage each night with MVA as well. It is the titleholders time and it takes away from her and her moment. Then at the crowning, it should be the winner and outgoing titleholder only. You don’t see four hundred people crowing Miss USA or MAO. The spotlight should be on the new queen.
So this is a lot but #1 is the most important. There were a lot of spectators, contestants, and potential contestants that are now more confused than ever

We are new to the pageant world and just heard about this board. My daughter wanted to watch Volunteer before we decided which system to invest our time and money it. We had planned to compete in GA America, but have heard so much negative about the board. I don't know the GA Volunteer board, but have heard nothing negative. Our concern now is the scoring. We watched all the preliminaries and thought we were spot on, but only one of our picks made top 5. Can someone please help us understand how the composite works? Is it interview? We are so puzzled how the judges panel could have come up with that top 5. Maybe America is the way we need to go? My daughter is very talented, amazing interview, but swimsuit (while it's not bad) is not her strongest area. Can someone please advise?

I was in full agreement of the results until the Top 5. It's like the Top 5 was flipped with the bottom 5 for the end. After talent, if there was a 3rd person to eliminate, it would have been Mississippi. It was awful. That was not dancing. I don't know what that was.

I really hope the National Board reevaluates the scoring criteria and what they are looking for. They went backwards with picking a winner from Alexa to Hannah. They went from someone who needed scholarship money and was competing for the right reasons to someone who isn't in need of scholarship money.

It should have be Indiana and Kentucky for the final 2. What a disappointment.

Congratulations on making it through the first year of Miss Volunteer America.

I have questions for the future- besides going to the TN local pageants, a few state pageants, a children's hospital and an occasional parade or gala, what opportunities did the national titleholders really have this past year?

I'm let down by what was accomplished by the organization. I expected more than what was seen.

National sponsor Joann's is not sending a good message. Paige is photoshopping her pictures to look skinnier than Miss Volunteer America and state titleholders. Going from a size 20+ to a 2 in the same day is not physically possible. I would not want my daughter working anyone that distorts their body image this much. MVA really needs to watch who they are partnering with.

**ANNOUNCING THE STEPHEN YEARICK MEMORIAL FUND**

In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to the newly established Stephen Yearick Memorial Fund- The memorial fund is being established in honor of Stephen Yearick regarding the causes that were important to him.

Stephen was a strong supporter of pageantry and scholarship programs across the country and the mission to empower young women through fashion with his impeccable designs in evening wear, stage wear and interview wear. Stephen also had a passion for playing the piano and the accordion and was a strong supporter of the performing arts. Criteria for awards and scholarships will be set forth in the near future by a committee in conjunction with the Yearick family and several of Stephen's close friends.

Contributions towards the Stephen Yearick Memorial Fund are tax deductable and can be made via Paypal, Venmo, Check and/or money order. For more information, please visit: https://tinyurl.com/2v4fhm7m

USA had lots of issues that have stayed private. Someone got paid! MAO has a great Miss A but the org as a whole is disconnected from reality and soon to die. Find another arena to develop yourself young women!

I saw that Allison is working on having a Volunteer USA pageant! Saw stipulations for age, height, and BMI. Other than not having talent, how would the USA format differ from Volunteer America?

Would love to know everyone's thoughts! I logged in right at the beginning of the princess number. Ouch...a former teen sang...my ears must be bleeding! And notice the front row always consists of Alison's daughter and niece?

I just saw that my state rep said she competed on stage last night and has interview this morning. Is that normal that girls do on stage prelim competition before interview? We all know that judges can be swayed in that room, so is it unfair that not all girls got to interview before stage competition?

From the look of things so far maybe they should just call the pageant southern America . Doesn’t seem like the judges like anyone else

I want this pageant to succeed, but I am sure my post is about to be deleted and I will be blocked.

I served on a committee to develop a new national pageant years ago. We tried to develop something that was completely new and fresh and innovative. The organizer opted to invest in something deemed more profitable and was correct with that decision, with the company that was developed now worth more than $100.000.000.00.

That said, the organizer insisted that beauty events (the organizer hated the word “pageant” because it represented antiquated thinking) were outdated and no longer necessary and had to become relevant if they were to survive. We specifically looked at the current events and were to innovate, innovate, innovate, and we did. We created pipelines, developed related organizations, created mock marketing campaigns and opportunities for non-contestants to receive scholarships and recognition. More than $50,000 was invested. I was so excited at what we created and so disappointed when other projects were selected. I signed many non-disclosure agreements, so I cannot share ideas, but I believe our ideas would have revitalized pageants or at least shifted the conversation.

With that said, I heard a few weeks ago about this organization. I was hopeful. Now, I am not. I see a logo that is an obvious copy of the Miss America logo. I see a crown that is obviously a replica of the Miss America Crown. I see a format that copied Miss America to the letter. I question whether the goal is to create an event that will survive or simply try to hurt Miss America. I guess of those two options, hurting Miss America is more likely, but if the pageant is to be a nationally recognized event in ten years, leadership is failing.

I am SO disappointed in the direction Miss America has gone. Miss USA seems to be holding on a bit better, but I hear the death knell for both systems. To Miss Volunteer, INNOVATE and for heaven’s sake, consider another name. Everyone knows the title is named after Tennessee… maybe use each state’s nickname in the state title, but change the national title name. I want you to succeed, but doing what others were doing, and failing, is a lazy and guaranteed way to fail at your goal.

I am ready to hear that I am a hater or a loser or whatever else you want to throw my way, but I do want this thing to get off the ground. Remember this: Miss America was in REAL decline using the format you copied.
