I recall overhearing my mom on the phone to our pediatrician as she discussed my baby sister's inability to poop. This was in the late 50's. Mom repeated to grandma that they would "send out some suppositories". The pharmacy delivered some items a short time later.

I was sitting on the sofa and mom laid my baby sister next to me and removed the safety pins from her diaper. She held her legs up as she used one of the long suppositories to insert in her anus. I recall the suppository slipping back out several times and mom pushing it back in and securing the diaper.

My older sister was nearby with grandma. She said "why don't you just give her an enema like you do for us?" Mom said this was what the doctor suggested and if it doesn't work it's ok to try an enema. Grandma removed a small white bulb syringe from the sack that the suppositories came in and showed it to us.

After about an hour, mom removed the diaper and there was no poop. She and grandma set up to use that bulb syringe to inject an enema into my baby sister. I had to move off the sofa and some plastic was put down. The diaper was now under my baby sister as mom and grandma gave her the enema with the small syringe. It took 3 times before the return caused her to poop. Boy did it stink. The messy diaper was put into the diaper pail and my sister was bathed.

That small white bulb syringe that said Davol on the box, was cleaned and sat on the window sill in the shower. The red enema bag hung from the shower head, and the suppositories were stored in the fridge. I experimented with each of those in an effort to try and get out of the enemas that I got from both mom and grandma. The suppositories were not used on me or my older sister, but the enema bag was.
