Laxatives were seldom if ever used when I was growing up. The enema bag and some warm or soapy water was the extent of it around our house. Mom and grandma didn't want the additional expense of any laxatives, even though we kids asked if some Feen-a-Mint after we saw the ads pitching laxatives.

Some 60-70 years later, I still avoid laxatives except in specific circumstances, where they may be a requirement of the physicians treating me. Early on, our pediatrician and then the adult's family doctor, as well as their nurses, were strong proponents of a simple enema or series whenever tummy trouble was occurring. I carried that throughout life.

I did comply with a laxative prep prior to colonoscopy, IVP, or other surgical procedures. Enemas were still an aspect of the prep and made the strong laxatives much less irritating and more effective. There were studies that suggested those G.I. preps were aided by emptying the lower bowel in addition to the various laxative products. My physicians and their nurses agreed that I was ok to use the enema as an adjunct and commented that too many people refuse to use any enemas.
