Enemas for fevers, and most other maladies, were very common in my childhood back in the 50's and 60's. My sisters were also subjected to those cold/cool enemas as administered by mom and grandma. Many medical/health texts of the day, would suggest bringing down those fevers especially if they were approaching 105 degrees. Garlic enemas were also quite common for colds and soapy enemas for constipation. OTC meds were seldom given in our home, inasmuch as the costs were much less for an enema since the equipment was very handy.

It seems that enemas are seldom prescribed these days and only as a last resort. Many recent texts suggest letting the fever run it's course and antibiotics are limited in use.

I remember my grandma being in the hospital in the mid 60's and was running extreme fevers. We kids were allowed a very brief visit due to her critical condition. A red enema bag was hanging by her bed & strange red water bottles were nearby in the room. We kids were curious inasmuch as grandma had given us many enemas growing up. Mom and dad told us that cold enemas and cold water bottles were used to try and break her fever. It didn't happen and she died overnight.
