We are about the same age. I graduated in 1973. The first I remember was in first grade. Me and two other boys in front of the class facing the chalk board with hands on the board. Our teacher Mrs. Austin had a small paddle. I can't remember how many licks we each got or what we did to earn it. 1961 was a little bit ago. I also remember being scared but when it happened it didn't really hurt at all. Dad's belt at home though, that's another story.

Do you think that paddling was helpful in preventing you and others from misbehaving? I know for me the possibility of receiving an old fashion spanking was a deterrent preventing me from doing certain actions. For example, at a young age, I knew what happened if I shoplifted.

Dear Rainey,
I don't know about others but I was afraid of the Principal's paddle. I did shoplift candy when I was 10-11. I did get caught and Dad's belt strap really tore my bare bottom up. No more shoplifting after that.

Without a doubt, Educators had much more control of discipline and maintaining an orderly environment back then. But as a parent, I would prefer to be notified of behavior problems and left to take care of them myself, than allow someone else whack my child with a 2 foot long hunk of lumber.
