We are about the same age. I graduated in 1973. The first I remember was in first grade. Me and two other boys in front of the class facing the chalk board with hands on the board. Our teacher Mrs. Austin had a small paddle. I can't remember how many licks we each got or what we did to earn it. 1961 was a little bit ago. I also remember being scared but when it happened it didn't really hurt at all. Dad's belt at home though, that's another story.

I know for me the possibility of receiving an old fashion spanking was a deterrent preventing me from doing certain actions. For example, at a young age, I knew what happened if I shoplifted. But as a parent, I would prefer to be notified of behavior problems and left to take care of them myself, than allow someone else whack my child with a 2 foot long hunk of lumber.
