Immaturity. As I said, being cool with my friends was my priority, and I hung around with rebellious types. Spanking was a real fear because it was so uncool. I guess it was ironic that the most effective punishment for me was a spanking, and after a certain age, I was considered too old for it.

Around the age of 19 or so, I suddenly grew up, realized I had been stupid for years, and became much more responsible. Those earlier years might have been far more productive, but that's water under the bridge.

Not earning a living, but I became much more devoted to my career aspirations. In fact, I quit my job to pursue them. My employment after high school paid well, but did not inspire good behavior.
