As a kid my mother (and occasionally father) spanked my siblings and I pants down, without exception. I am 29 and pregnant with a ten year old stepdaughter. I do believe in spanking children for correction and discipline,and spank her the same way I was(as I will my own daughter).

But even though I live in a part of the country where spanking is still prevalent (and belong to a church which believes in the "rod of correction") I think less and less of the parents in my age group not only often do not spank, but when they do it is not pants down. One of my gfs was even kind of taken back when I told her about spanking in our home.

Even as a kid I know many of my friends were not spanked bare. I even suggested to my mother this might be a better way to spank, an idea which went over like a lead balloon. lol

But I was just wondering how many kids actually are spanked bare, Us with a "special interest" might tend to exaggerate the numbers.

I don't know about kids today, other than spanking appears to be uncommon where I and my family live, which is in a few areas of the country.

Where I grew up, we always got spanked on the bare bottom. The words, "Take your pants down," was how every spanking was announced. I hated to hear those words, but it was fear of the punishment coming, not a conscious concern about my pants. As I remember, most spankings I knew about in the neighborhood were pants down. That is the way it was done and everyone seemed to expect it to be that way without any controversy. It was never explained to me, but I assumed that it had to be that way because spankings stung a lot worse on bare skin, and a parent probably wanted to see what they were doing so as not to cause too much injury.

My mom told me that my friend was not the best behaved child she had ever seen, and her mother spanked her more than I was spanked. Her explanation was for spanking to work it needs to to be "an OUCH.". So I was actually the lucky one. lol

I did not dwell on it in fear, but I really hated spankings. And the consequence of a spanking was not far down in considering the consequences of my choices, and definitely did help guide my behavior, into my teens. Today I am a responsible law biding teacher and parent, and spanking helped form who I am.

I wish it wasn't the case, but, spanking seems to be disappearing. Maybe there is less bare bottom spanking as part of the drift that way.
