Judy, you told exactly how I remember growing up in the late 50s.
They were displayed in every drug store. Some had them in the window..

I snooped in every home I visited. Found enema bulbs and the bag in almost everyone!

We also had a one, or two, ounce baby syringe. I think it actually was 2ounce enema bulb. It was only used when we were pre toddler age. Then a larger syringe was used.

My aunt had the same one. It was red and had a black nozzle on it. She also had a larger 8 oz enema bulb.

She was a nurse. My cousin and I were given enemas by her. About once a week.

Will write more later.

Judy, you told exactly how I remember the enema in the 50s and 60s.
They were openly displayed. I remember in the town drug store - was drinking cherry coke with gf — we were about 9 or so.

Right across from us was the enemas. It was fun waiting for a mom to come in and buy one. Of course we never said a word. Some of them had their kids in tow. Toddlers all the way to 11 or so. Guessing the ages. Most were boys!

A mom came in, she had two boys with her guessing about 6 and 10, she asked the woman where the enemas were. The woman who worked there brought her to right in front of us. The woman asked who it was for. She replied “him”. Then if needed “him too. “ She first pointed at the 6 yo.

The woman took a box off the shelf — and it was well stocked! — and removed an enema bulb syringe. While talking to the mom about the enema she was squeezing the rubber bulb in and out. Making that air sound out of the nozzle.
It was the red bulb with the black nozzle. The younger boy had no idea what he was in store for. But the older boy had that “oh no” look on his face when he saw the enema in her hand!!

She was very helpful to the mom. Told how to make a soapy solution with bar of ivory in a pan. Preparing the bed or table..and him. She told the mom not to let his protesting stop her from giving him an enema. She told she has seen many throw a fit when knew was going to get a enema
She handed the mom the boxed enema, Vaseline jar and bar of ivory soap.
The mom looked little confused about the explanation from her.
The woman told her she used to be a nurse and if she needed any help to let her know.
We couldn’t hear for a few minutes…but then heard the woman telling the mom “good . I”’ll be over at nine in the morning.” “He can get it on a towel on the kitchen table”. The mom brought the enema bulb, Vaseline and bar of soap.

I was nervous knowing the woman was going to the home to teach and give the enema.
This was common in those days. Moms would go to the home to give enemas or to teach the mother how to give enemas.

I’m sure he was in for a surprise when she arrived. Sure not only the younger one got an enema but the older one got one too!

OMG ! the woman from the drug store is there to give and teach the enema!

We looked at the enemas before leaving. Making sure she didn’t see us. Yes, the mom got the 6 oz enema bulb syringe!

Both my aunt and mom spanked. Never got paddle or belt.
Spankings were across their lap. Bare hand on bare. Hard!

Enemas were NEVER given as punishment. Always for health reasons. Such as bringing a fever down, constipated child, or if she felt one was needed.

When staying with my aunt ( she was a nurse) I remember my cousin getting enemas from her. I am 7 years older than him. So remember him getting one.
