Good question. What is a natural reaction to pain? Get a burn, insect bite, achy muscles, etc, you try to sooth the area effected. Scratch an itch, stretch a cramp… The reaction can be voluntary or involuntary, conscious or unconscious. In some cases, maybe it only seems to help, or at least has a psychological benefit, which is soothing to the mind.

Mostly, I think it has to do with how sharp or irritating the pain is. Some kinds of pain grab your attention and won't let go. Some kinds of pain are there but are dull or numbing. A very sharp sting is hard to ignore, and the hands go there to rub whether you want them to or not. I remember in school, it looked weak to rub after a paddling but, unfortunately, not so easy to pretend it wasn't burning.

I relate to the school paddling burn. It was embarrassing to get paddled in the hall and renter the class rubbing your backside. It stung so bad I couldn't help but hold it and rub no pretending on my part. Yes those hard chairs were no good to sit in afterwards.
