So what's that like? Is it as bad as I've read it is?

I never experienced it. On a number of occasions my mother said she should do this to me or my brother, but always in a jocular tone. It wasn't until I was grown up and started to explore my fetish that I realized that this is an actual practice. Hopefully I'll find someone who won't hesitate to do this as needed to keep me in line.

You should avoid it. The chemicals in even Ivory, the 99 and 44/100 pure soap are really bad for you. Forcing it on children is disgusting and, imho, ought to be regarded as seriously abusive. Others on spanko boards say that soaping against the will of the recipient is safe and a legit punishment for speaking obscene words, etc. I have not read of any injuries but I haven't tried to find evidence very hard. So, my advice would be skip this.

My mother frequently washed our mouths out. She considered it a mild punishment, as did I, compared to her spankings. I don't know of a single child who has been poisoned or injured by soaping. I used it a couple of times and have never understood the controversy except by those who are against all punishment.

I used soap to wash dirty words out of mouths. Kids pick up all kinds of inappropriate words. Soap is a good safe way to teach them not to use these words. From what I hear, parents are not using enough soap these days!

When my brother who was younger was about 10 he cursed and I saw my mom bring him to the bathroom upstairs and she went the bar of soap and told him to open his mouth for cursing then she scrubbed it all around and on his tongue then after she was finished he was aloud to rinse. I remember him crying saying that the taste was horrible and lingering in his mouth. She said that will teach you not to curse. He kept rinsing and spitting.

I am against mouth soaping for the medical reasons I have mentioned. In the election discourse this year politicians often use both lying and bad words.

Even worse is that TV commentators and anchor persons convey those same bad words using "bleep" or "effing" or "F-bomb" or other substitute words that get the point across without actually saying the word. How would this have worked with most moms? Would it have saved your bottom from a spanking?
