The letter was a follow up to a previous issue’s letter that recommended spanking. I would guess that it was sometime around summer/early fall of 1945. [ Post a Reply to This Message ]

https://spkcomics.tumblr.com/ -- this is a compilation of various spanking scenes in comics, but it includes newspaper clippings as well. I used application WFDownloader to download them so I could browse them at my leisure, and the filenames tend to be pretty descriptive for search purposes.

I grew up in the fifties early sixties, the "golden age" of spanking when almost all parents spanked. Today this kind of thing would be unheard of in mainstream media. It was ubiquitous then. Back then the Sunday "Funnies" always had one or two kids (including teenagers like the Bumstead girl) getting smacked.

But one thing puzzled me. So I decided one day to bring it up (also perhaps in a ploy to usher in a bit of kids' rights). I asked Mom why the kids in the comics didn't get it on their bare bum like we did. Without missing a beat Mom said they did, but the newspapers couldn't show it!

I don't think there is any actual rule, it is just a change in attitude on child discipline. The various newspaper letters and articles cited were 10-1 pro-spanking, and that was the widespread consensus at the time. That has changed, especially among more "liberal" media. Back then "Dear Abby" commonly approved of spanking. Today she will recommend counseling.
