Hello everyone,

Well, I was born in 1953 and I'm from Germany. I hope my English is not too silly.

I think the reasons why I am a pro-spanker today and have been for many years are pretty much the same reasons why I hated spanking as a child: It just works!

Of course there is more, much more to good parenting. But a decent, appropriate spanking is the ultimate way to show that certain behaviour will not be tolerated. And in a way that the children are sure to remember. And as a mum of three and grandmother of eight, I know exactly what I'm talking about.

And yes, just as I received some unjust or inappropriate punishment as a child, I would no longer carry out all the punishments meted out to my children or grandchildren today, or at least not in exactly the same way. But that doesn't change the principle. There are limits in life, and the consequences of overstepping these limits hurt. Sometimes a lot.

On balance, I can say that my upbringing has helped me to become a responsible person, and I believe that the upbringing I have passed on to my children has also done them good in their development. And I have never heard anything else in my circle of relatives and acquaintances - as long as the spanking was not completely abusive and excessive.

Hello Gertrud,

I have always heard the German version of "Those who can't learn, must feel." It sounds as though you are saying that even adjusted for the new times, there are still occasions when you think that spanking might be the best punishment for a grandchild. I am curious what features such situations would have, given that back home in Germany they have banned even mild spankings. I understand you are assuming the US environment.
