My parents spanked bare, but I don't think there was any designed procedure based on the kind of misbehavior.

I think a parent must react to the moment rather than be bound by too many preconceived ideas. There are various factors surrounding a particular punishment, under a particular set of circumstances at that time, that determine an outcome. In hindsight (no pun intended), it should make sense to the one who got a spanking.
