I would describe the lightest spankings I received as "My butt is on fire and I can't take any more!"

The majority of spankings would go on until I was at the "I can't breathe or think, but I'll never be bad again and I'll do anything I'm told!"

Then there were the worst ones reaching the stage of "Nothing exists beyond my throbbing, burning butt and it's never going to end."

Mom used an old hairbrush most of the time. She also used a wooden ruler on occasion. Dad used a double-wide leather belt or a regular wooden paddle or both. My brothers hated Dad's belt, but my sister and I considered Mom's ruler to be the worst.
