We had the belt line gauntlet in my scout troop and on my last camping trip ever, I yielded to temptation and chopped through a cypress-knee to free a boat. Scout leaders are fanatics about waterfront problems so when I and a younger kid were detected trying to propel the boat with long poles, we got lectured about the oath we had recited at almost every meeting and then sentenced to run a short beltline. Not every member went on this trip. Nonetheless we felt it and since it was a chilly Spring night, I remember so clearly going from cold to stinging hot in my bottom. "Or as I put it to myself: So cold and then sooo hot!

What I think is most interesting about my memory is that what was I thinking the whole time I was whacking away at the cypress knee? It was certain that we would be caught. I think you are right, there was an outside chance we could get away with it. The trip was boring and so I must have reasoned that the adventure of poling a batteau would be so much fun ...

How clear was spanking in your memory? I do think "refreshers" make it much easier to resist temptation. It had been years since I had had to run a beltline. They were quite intense doubled-belt whacks since you got a start lick when you were standing in that bent over your knees position holding or trying to hold your ankles. Then you ran down a double line or members who tried to spank you with their belts as you ran by. This has long been banned by the National Organization. But in its day, you got thirty whacks in six seconds or so and you felt the effects overnight and on the day after, at least.

So, it is the perfect case for the "What were you thinking?" inquiry!
