Its been a gradual change and there have always been some parents who were against it. If you like stats there are a series of surveys by the NSPCC that show it was less common and a lot less severe in 2008 than in 1998. As I understand it up until the 1970s it was virtually impossible to go through school without getting it. On a funny note a group of my little brothers friends were having a debate about being smacked. It would have been about 2008 probably in response to that survey, which had a lot of publicity. There were maybe a dozen of them, girls and boys. Only one girl said she never remembered being smacked at all. They dared her to accept just one slap so she knew what it was like. I don't know why baby bro was chosen to show her. He insists her didn't even smack her very hard, but she made quiet a fuss and confused him by messaging him all evening complaining about his hand print on her butt. [ Post a Reply to This Message ]

I think the change of attitude about spanking children started way back in the 1950s with Dr. Spock, and then established itself in the subsequent decades with loads of research in child development. By 2008, parents who wanted it had the information, so if they still spanked their kids then, and were open to admitting it, I don't see what has changed since then. What surprises me is that anyone would be surprised that some kids have never been spanked. I think it's just common knowledge. In my childhood, many of us were spanked, and yet some parents were 100% against it. I have no proof, but I have to assume their children, even in the "old days," were never spanked. I've read a lot of spanking forums that cater to adult spanking, and people often say they've never been spanked. [ Post a Reply to This Message ]

Here in the U.S. spanking still seems more prevalent in the South and thr Midwest, though I am sure it is still common in other areas, too. Second, I think it was more common a generation or two ago for parents to acknowledge they spanked. When I was growing up, past a certain age no one talked about getting spanked. It was not uncommon there, especially i more rural areas, to hear a parent threaten younger kids with a spanking. “Do you want me to bust your butt” was something I heard often. I have lived in the South for about a dozen years now, and while I don’t hear threats like that made, I have actually seen a few times moms giving a younger kid a couple of smacks on the butt in public. When I was younger my parents un-airconditioned church would have a longggggggggg Sunday service followed by a social, but first all the kids who couldn't behave through the service went down the basement for a spanking.
