 My mother read us an old poem “The Patter of the Shingle” about a boy getting spanked with one. I was about 12. She got one & used it. She was so satisfied with it that she kept & used it on us throughout our school years. The embarrassment of being over you mother’s lap getting paddled to real tears as a teenager ups the effect markedly.

Bit of a left field one, but being a tradie Dad always had a sturdy wooden yardstick in the garage.

That yardstick kept 3 sometimes boistrous boys under control. Man it packed a big punch. 1 or more crying kids/teens with a badly whacked bottom was very much a thing.

Reckon the yardstick deserved to be on same level as belt/strap/paddle.
