From my experience, thethickness of the paddle makes the most difference and I have made a few. I use 1/2 thick oak project boards for the paddles I have made. I think that thickness makes for a lot of sting without being thuddy. I have only used them on consenting adults and have taken a few sample swats myself, just to know what it is like.
