Did stores in the old days have racks of paddles? Not those flimsy novelty paddles, but real ones?

I'm not a spring chicken, but even 'back in the day' I don't remember seeing anything except novelty paddles in stores. I do know that they were teacher supply stores where school paddles were sold, but I was never in one.

I was born in 1947 and in my neighborhood was a children's store clothing, cribs etc. Near the back was a show case with various implements like paddles or straps.

I've seen paddles in the University Bookstore on campus. It's for fraternities / sororities but could be bought by others...

Wherever I've gone to a mall I haven't been to before, first thing I do is check the directory to see if they have a paddle store. My wife says I'm nuts, but I'll keep looking til I find one. Then we'll see who's laughing.

Some Arts & Crafts stores like Michaels sell Frat style paddles of various sizes meant to be decorated.
F.W. Woolworth's had when I was a boy a bin of brushes labeled "Paddle Brushes" that looked like they were dual use.
