I had many discussions with other moms in my extended family, and a close friend/neighbor, and even shared details with all of them. But in the current environment it's my experience everyone in one of those discussion circles trusts those with whom they do share. In my almost 20 years as a parent though, I've maybe heard five or six small snippets of other moms acknowledging a spanking or that it was practiced in their homes. I think the assumption we all could make is that it may vary a bit from home to home or family to family, but real spankings probably involve some degree of sting to the bottom of the naughty recipient(s). That's probably the part too that we'd all be most cautious about saying. Thinking back to last week, how the mom I overheard stated her boy "screamed bloody murder, you know how they do that," acknowledged at least a traditional or "old fashioned" spanking. In my own case, I probably have stated it similarly, and even described how a certain sounding howl told me a spanking worked. But I also tried to make a little light of it by sometimes calling that sound "the spanking song."

My own mom and mother in law have both shared memories from the 1960s and 1970s. One thing I find fascinating is that they both have said how, back then, moms openly share knowing or approving glances when a child was acting up, the glance was easily translated that they (the child) needed a spanking. My mother in law in particular recalls times when she heard other adults offer advice along the lines "I think someone needs a paddle over their rear!" Times have definitely changed, and spanking may be somewhat less common, and is certainly more private. But I'm pretty convinced good old fashioned spanking is still not as rare as some may think.
