Although we have raised to very good young ladies, my husband and I did joke how they had their moments growing up, and how little girls are not always made of sugar, spice, and all things nice. Instead of a "spanking itch," it was more a sense that one would be needed soon. On that note, I also appreciated my husband's sense of our girls' behavioral trends. They were both very much "daddy's girls," and he doded on them when things were good. But he took note how a poor choice or two could quickly add up if not corrected, and from time to time he had his own spanking itch. As others have said, we weren't quick to act just on the sense that we may have WANTED to give a spanking, or especially if we were a bit angry at one of them (usually for poor choices).

Sometimes, the other factor was the "shelf life" of spankings. Our girls both averaged about three per year (so once every four months or so). Usually we could just about predict on the calendar when the behavior would "backslide" or poor choices would be made. Usually a couple little things either added up, or the next instance proved a bit less acceptable. They each also had a "bad year" or two, where maybe it was four or five spankings in a year. It usually took just a week or two of watching such a slide before a spanking would happen.
