As usual Mary is spot on. I have never subscribed to the idea that a boy magically becomes an adult the day he turns 18. In another forum I posed the question when a boy reached adulthood. Almost to a person the answer was 18. Then I asked this question: “ If you and your husband were going on a two week vacation, would you leave your 18 year old son and your 16 year old son home alone unsupervised?” The answers were a resounding no. One mother said her house would be like a war zone when they got home.

When 21 was the age of majority spanking was still used on 18, 19, and 20 year olds who still lived at home. 18 year olds still in high school were considered “children,” and many went to bed crying after a meeting with the hairbrush.
A simpler time.
