My big problem with Jack and weather was when he was 9 and 10. His football game on Saturday morning was the highlight of his week, and if it was rained off then I had a disappointed little boy on my hands who might well earn himself a spanking if we weren't careful. I say "we" - I remember Debbie saying there were times when she thought she was working harder to avoid a spanking than her son was, and it could be like that here.

If I couldn't send him up to the farm, where there was always something to do out of doors, even in the rain, then I would invent an errand for him in the village. My most successful was getting him interested in baking a chocolate cake for tea, and then discovering that I was out of flour. (Yeah, right.) So I would send him off to the village shop to get it. It worked like a charm: he went off grumbling and came back jumping in the puddles and singing.

After helping me make the cake (mainly licking out the mixing bowl) and a long hot bath, I had a happy relaxed boy to spend the evening with and no spanking. So what if I had to watch one of his favourite films for the 193rd time?
