Count me as another Mom that feels the children having a good, hard cry is important. As Mary said, it is very cathartic for the child. But it also another factor that lets us know the spanking is working exactly as intended.

Whenever I have had to spank, even relatively early on during my hand portion, the children are soon bawling and wailing loudly. With already an abundance of tears and snot and much more to come. And especially so when the hairbrush (or spoon) comes into play.

When having to spank older children, some of them have tried to grit or tough it out. However, it doesn't last too long and soon enough the dam will burst with their bawling and wailing, as well. And they will make that trip through the 'spanking time machine', with plenty more spanking still to go.

As for how long do I let them cry, I don't put a time limit on it. I let them cry it out as long as they want and need to, even while they do their corner time afterwards. And of course when they need Mommy or Grandma to comfort them afterwards, I expect nothing less for them to cry hard and want comfort, which I am happy to give. :)
