I started spanking at about the age of 3. I think that is a good starting point and leads to respect of adult authority and respect for the parents. I made the mistake of stopping spankings once my oldest son was 12 and started showing signs of puberty. That was the biggest mistake I ever made. His brattiness and disrespect went through the roof. Restrictions and grounding had no affect on him but caused more problems for me trying to enforce it. About half of my friends also stopped and they also found a big uptick in rebellious behavior. Once he reached 14 and got involved with some vandalism and had an attitude with his friends us Moms got together and decided Spanking was back on the table as a first option. It took a few weeks and about 10 spankings before the message sank in. The bottom line Spanking is one of the most effective tools in our arsenal

I never had to spank on an actual birthday but on several holidays I did.

You are an awesome mentor Sarah and Cherrie and Amanda and Mary and got me on track. Embarrassment does play a larger role as Sarah and all you homes have pointed out. I bet the spanking at the party for your son sent him a message as well as other spankings you gave like the most recent 5 to AJ Julian Derek Kevin and Adrian? All earned and well deserved. I think the spankings of Derek and company were on Andy birthday weekend.
