Jack wasn't bad at getting up for school. My problem when he was younger was that he would come down to breakfast with dirty knees from the day before, even though I had told him to wash them before he went to bed. This meant I had to send him back upstairs to wash them and gave us less time before I went to work and he went to school.

I tried getting his friend's mother (were he went for his tea after school) to make him wash them after school. I tried making him wash them as soon as I got home from work. I tried making him come downstairs for a knees inspection at bedtime (he rather enjoyed this - standing to attention like a soldier and being told he was a good boy when I saw they were clean.)

But when he got to 10 I decided he was old enough to take responsibility for washing his own knees. So if he had been told to wash them the night before and had failed to do so, then he was spanked for disobedience - bare bottom with the back of the hairbrush.

I can still remember the lecture I gave before I bared him: "I don't mind how dirty you get as long as you get clean again afterwards, but I won't put up with being ignored like that."
