I was a bare bottom spanker right from the start. I will give my usual reasons here, but really it was my instinct as a mother faced with a defiant little boy: shorts down, underpants down and over my lap for a well smacked bottom.

As for the reasons, if you are going to spank with an implement - and I used a hairbrush once my son was 8 - you do need to see what you are doing for safety. It also makes the spanking sting more, and I am afraid it does have to sting considerably if it is going to work.

But I think above all a bare bottom - and even more a *bared* bottom - shows that Mum is boss. It also added to the ritual of the spanking, which is what they remember about it rather than the pain, and that helped to undermine the tough guy act I sometimes got from my Jack when he had been naughty.
