The winter freeze we had was tough on bare feet and as you say plain ordinary socks are easily ruined. I got my son some rubberised soled socks shoes to wear but he hated the feel of them said he'd rather get cold toes. So I had to carry the socks shoes with me whenever we went out so they were there for when the cold got too much.

Back to usual temps now like 6C and back out barefoot as usual, went to a shopping centre yesterday the first trip to one this year and my sons soles were absolutely black afterwards.
