So you don't need any footwear and in a way this might make you more independent. It seems to me that parents who put shoes on their children's feet whenever they go out (or even at home too) not only deny them all the experiences they could have going barefoot but also make them dependent of shoes.
I still think children should be given a choice, especially in areas that get uncomfortably cold in winter. Just treat shoes like protection from cold, like gloves, wool hats, scarves and warm jackets. I've heard of parents living in an area with a lot of construction work where all the streets around the house are gravel. But in the absence of such adverse conditions, and assuming there's no peer pressure towards wearing shoes, most children will decide for the barefoot option because it's easier and they will appreciate feeling the various surfaces.
