Hi Sally and all, great you get to travel to Australia, we have never been there. It's probably nearing the hottest season there now on the southern hemisphere.
Throughout summer my daughter walked all around the city barefoot without an issue, she's resistant to heat. But on the hottest days we went out in the morning and evening, avoiding the heat at noon. I also wear sandals out in town in the summer while my daughter goes barefoot.
Material also plays a great role, a lawn will never heat up as much as asphalt does. I hear some towns are now using lighter colored pavement in pedestrian zones; of course it's much better when you have trees giving shade. I checked her bare feet regularly and there has been no heat damage such as peeling skin, no discomfort either. Children will know when to go into the shade, when it gets uncomfortably hot under their feet (coldness is trickier because when feet go numb it's harder to feel how cold is too cold).
