Subject: Recent holiday

Hello everyone,

It’s been a while since I posted, but I felt compelled to share how our recent half-term break went. As many of you know, I’m the father of two daughters, now 10 and 14, and they have been completely barefoot since their very first steps. We’ve always embraced this lifestyle, but our recent trip to Corralejo, Fuerteventura, really reminded me of just how capable, comfortable, and confident they are living this way.

To be honest, we didn’t even pack shoes or socks for them—and we never felt the need to. From the moment we left our front door to the airport, through security, and onto the four-hour flight, they were happily barefoot. It’s always a point of interest for fellow travelers, but the girls handle it with such natural grace that it just becomes the new normal for everyone around us.

Once we arrived in Corralejo, the girls were in their element. We made a daily trek of about 3km into town, traversing the varied terrain of the island. By the end of each day, their soles were painted with that beautiful, fine island dust—a testament to the ground they’d covered.

One of the highlights was a day spent hiking up to the volcano. They scrambled over the rocks and navigated the paths, their feet turning a brilliant shade of orange from the volcanic sand. Seeing them connect with the landscape so directly, feeling the texture of the earth underfoot, is always a joy to watch. They moved with such sure-footedness that they made the climb look effortless.

In the afternoons, we transitioned seamlessly from the volcanic trails to the golden sands of the beach, and then straight into the bustling markets and local restaurants. Whether we were navigating the crowded stalls or sitting down for dinner, they were completely at ease. There’s something remarkably liberating about watching them navigate the world exactly as they are, without the artificial barrier of footwear.

There were no questions, no issues, and most importantly, no compromise on their comfort. It was a week of absolute freedom. They’ve grown up barefoot, and seeing them at 10 and 14, still choosing this path with such joy, continues to affirm why we chose this lifestyle for them in the first place.

Has anyone else taken their kids abroad recently and had a similarly "shoe-free" experience? I’d love to hear your stories.
