Steff's experience nicely describes all the wonderful things a barefoot child (or adult) can feel in a city in summer.

While natural ground in meadows, fields, forests and beaches is a lovely experience and certainly healthy and good, it's important not to limit the barefoot time to that Especially for children living in the city, the closest thing to natural ground might be parks (even there it's not always allowed to walk on the lawn).

But all the different kinds of paving stones, asphalt and concrete can also provide wonderful tactile experience and provide the stimulation necessary to build up tough and robust soles. I think city kids should walk barefoot whenever the temperature allows. Whether it's warm or cold, wet or dry also makes a big difference in what you get to feel. When it rains, puddles of water can provide great fun for kids!

It is just important to learn to see and avoid broken glass (or anything that can actually hurt). Regular city dirt isn't a problem though and easily scrubbed off when needed; black soles are any city kid's testament to all the wonderful things that they walked over and parents should welcome them and not get embarrassed or angry, whether the parents themselves decide to go barefoot with their children or not.

Since a city has so many sources of warmth, barefoot time doesn't have to stop in autumn, just dress your children warmly down to the ankles and give rain protection when it's wet. As long as the coldness doesn't bite or numb your nerves there's no danger of frostbite.
