Sometimes the temperature drop in fall is quick and steep (that's why it's called 'fall'?) But it's no problem for my children, they don't need a transition period to get their bare feet used to the cold, they just dress a bit more warmly from ankles up, wiggle their bare toes a bit more, maybe don't stand around waiting in one place for too long and they're perfectly fine.
Thinking of it, it's amazing what a range of different temperatures their bare feet are capable of handling! It's not long since they had absolutely no difficulties running around on sun baked asphalt roads that I found painfully hot myself (so I put on sandals), and next week might have the first nightly frost.
