Hi Carol,

They had always been barefoot at home, in the yard and in public, but their school wouldn't budge on the matter. Fortunately, we ended up needing to move, and we were able to "shop around" to find an elementary and high school that were both fine with them attending barefoot. We moved just before our daughter started kindergarten, and later on she was very proud to be able to say that she had never worn shoes to school. Our son's feet started getting much tougher from not needing to wear shoes to school, and they both started barefooting outside later into the winter and earlier in the spring. The rest, much like their footwear, is history.

Ours both absolutely loved going barefoot full time, and still do to this day. We had promised that we would let them get rid of their shoes for Christmas, and that year we were awoken not by their wanting to open presents but because they had their shoes bagged up and ready to donate and wanted to go as soon as possible. As it turned out, the Salvation Army didn't open for another few hours, but when it did we were the first ones there. To this day, the photo we took of them holding their last pairs of shoes over the donation bin might be the happiest I've ever seen them, and I don't think they stopped smiling for about a week after they were gone.

Do you have any plans for getting rid of your childrens' shoes once they're ready, and have you talked to them about it? We live in such a shoe-obsessed society that the idea of intentionally not owning footwear might not have even crossed their minds. Our kids only discovered it was possible when our son read about someone else doing it on the internet.
