I don't think my children need to be reminded they're children. They know it and when they try to be adult, even better, at some point they have to learn it!
There's something else though: Going barefoot everywhere and almost all year is "their own thing". Something that makes them different from the adults in family and most of their age outside the family, something makes them special.
Yes, they're actually tougher than us parents who go barefoot at home and in the garden, park and beach only. Be it on gravel trails that don't seem to slow them down much (though they're definitely not a favourite surface) or in the snow when they're out and about leaving their cute barefootprints. They are also great tree climbers using their fingers and toes remarkably.
As children they have a lot to learn and adults are better and more experienced at plenty of things, so it certainly boosts their self-confidence to have something they're better at, for a change.
(Yes, they know their limits, they're not invulnerable and they know how cold is too cold.)
When I was a kid I already spent my summers barefoot, to the delight of my maternal grandparents who said that going barefoot is a thing for boys ... As our oldest child is a girl who loved going barefoot in most seasons it was clear that we wouldn't make a difference and let all our children grow up this way!
