Hi, Mike, thanks for your story.
Though my children are braving the frost barefoot for limited times they are also looking forward to warmer temperatures!
And I agree that walking barefoot is fine just about everywhere including the city. I have heard from parents who are afraid of "toxic dust" harming their children's tender bare feet, but it has never done any of mine any harm and they all walk barefoot since they can walk, at least in the summer. Maybe it was worse when there was still leaded fuel leading to toxic lead compounds in the dust near roads. But the skin forms a pretty good barrier so if there is no injury, the road dust stays on the surface, maybe some of it sticking to upper skin cells so it stays dark after scrubbing. Since it's rather unlikely to touch your face with your feet, it's not a health problem if the soles get black. And what doesn't come off in the shower won't rub off anywhere else either. My daughter thinks it looks neat when her high arches stay clean and pale in contrast to the dark gray stains on her toes, balls and heels that she gets on a dry summer day in the city.

All the best greetings to you and your kids!
