Hi, Carol
My children don't even own a lot of socks (that they actually wear), I guess they've grown out of most without a need for replacement. There you remind me, time to get rid of the pairs that are now too small.
They report though that they all have quite a few sockfooters in class. The school has a rule that outside shoes aren't worn inside, though indoor slippers are mentioned many don't bother to wear them.
My three children are all eager and curious to see how cold they can tolerate, but of course they don't want painful frostbite so they are approaching their limits with all due caution, we discussed it all as winter was approaching: losing your senses in the cold can be tricky!
To get over the coldest days and still be able to go outside as much as they like, I got them all "Skinners kids line 2.0" which have an insole as an additional insulation on very cold ground. So that's what they wear in the morning to school when it's freezing but take them off as they arrive in school and on the way home later in the day it's already warm enough that they don't need them.
My daughter didn't particularly like the rubbery feeling under the sole so for a few days she experimentally tried wearing a warm pair of socks that she still had. She noticed their drawbacks though: No good traction on smooth ground, not nice to walk where it's wet, on asphalt they're wearing thin and little stones as they're now spread across all sidewalks to prevent slipping get caught in the fabric. So she stopped that experiment when they wore out on the soles and got a hole, since yesterday all three are going barefoot again (with wool legwarmers under long pants), it's currently not all that cold so when swiftly walking to school it's allright for them (and it's going to warm up a little more in the coming days).
After all bare feet don't wear out with use, they just get better!
